More than 3,000 officers across Virginia are involved in the Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run, now in its 23rd year. For these 3,000 officers, though, its about more than carrying the torch for Special Olympics Virginia. Its a mission; a serious commitment by the Virginia Law Enforcement community to pay homage to our heroes the Special Olympics Virginia athletes and their families.
Throughout the year, the organizations involved in the Torch Run, which include the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Sheriffs Association, the Virginia Department of Corrections and the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, host activities and events to benefit Special Olympics Virginia. The Torch Run itself begins in May and this year, it kicked off with the lighting of the flame in Norfolk. Officers then ran the torch more than 2,000 miles, from every corner of the state, leading up to 2008 Summer Games.
Thank you to all the Law Enforcement Torch Run officers for keeping the Flame of Hope burning bright throughout the year for Special Olympics Virginia and for raising more than $800,000 for the program this year.
